SHAMROCK & RUN 5K

The kappa Delta “Shamrock” philanthropy is our biggest national philanthropy. It is a project we put on once a year with much preparation and enthusiasm. Shamrock is a way for us to give back to the community and raise money for Prevent Child Abuse America, as well as a Olive Crest, the local foster center we proudly support. On the 13th of May, the Beta Rho chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority at San Diego State hosted their 2nd annual “Shamrock & Run”. Beta Rho’s “Shamrock & Run” was a 5k walk/run held at a local cove by the beautiful beaches of San Diego. Registration for the run was $20, guaranteeing participants a T-shirt, free lunch, and raffle ticket. We hosted a kids “fun run” after the walk as well, making it an event for all ages! Participants were able to register online at www.shamrock5k.info, which was created specifically for the event so that registration could be a simple process for the participants. Feel free to check it out! With much publicity throughout the campus and community, over 300 people were able to show their support at our event. We were even able to get reality TV star from this season’s Biggest Loser, Stephanie Anderson, to show her support at this event! With total sponsorships, donations, and registration fees, the Beta Rho chapter raised over $11,000! It was a fun-filled day for community members of all ages.

GIRL SCOUTS
Kappa Delta’s all around the world support the Girls Scouts. It is another one of our national philanthropies. Each semester, we at Beta Rho, plan a special event to do with a local troop in our area. We love spending time with the girls and are glad that we can give them a positive image to look up to. This last school year, we were able to host a tie-dye event with a local troop. We also served at this year’s Cookie Kick-Off in order to help all San Diego Girl Scout troops get ready for this year’s cookie-selling season! In addition, we were honored to be largest volunteer group to help at this year’s Operation Thin Mint, in which we shipped off cookies to soldiers in the Middle East.

American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Research Awards
Kappa Delta’s partnership with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) evolved out of its work with Children’s Hospital in Richmond, Va. After getting to know children with crippling diseases, Kappa Deltas wanted to make a difference not only in treatment, but in prevention. In 1947, the sorority established the Kappa Delta Research Fellowship in Orthopedy (now known as the Kappa Delta Orthopaedic Research Awards). Starting with a $1,000 contribution in 1950, Kappa Delta now presents three $20,000 awards annually to leading orthopaedic researchers, for a total of over $1.1 million since the partnership began.
Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Virginia
Kappa Delta’s support of the Children’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia dates back to 1921. The sorority became interested in the work being done in our founding state by William Tate Graham, M.D., a pioneer in the field known for treating polio victims. Dr. Graham had become renowned for his revolutionary approaches and never turned away a patient for their inability to pay.
Beginning with our initial pledge of $1,200 to support two beds, Kappa Delta’s commitment to Children’s Hospital over the years has never wavered. The sorority’s monetary and tangible gifts have totaled more than $2.2 million.
International Women’s Friendship Month
International Women’s Friendship Month first began as National Women’s Friendship Day in 1999 (celebrated the third Sunday in September each year). Created by Kappa Delta Sorority for all women, the day offered a chance for women to celebrate their special bonds with female friends.
As a national sorority with a membership of over 200,000 women, the leaders of Kappa Delta were well aware of the importance of women friends. They also recognized that friendship was not exclusive to the sorority.
Every year, more and more women hear about the celebration. We now have 34 states with governors’ proclamations endorsing women’s friendship. We are excited to report that several magazines and numerous newspapers have featured stories on the events. Many companies have also promoted the celebration, including Avon’s mark cosmetics, Maidenform, Teleflora, General Foods International, Women For Hire, Karen Neuburger, Ltd., Vera Bradley, Suzy’s Zoo, Seasons and Sentiments, Sally Lanes and b.sweets. Mark your calendars and join us in celebrating women’s friendship in September!

Dove Campaign for Real Beauty
In early 2006, Kappa Delta joined the groundbreaking Dove Campaign for Real Beauty to help raise self-esteem in girls and women. The campaign is a global effort intended to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition and discussion of beauty. Girls and women of all ages benefit from the campaign as we explore what it is to be beautiful with our friends, coworkers, mothers and daughters. The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty has included controversial ads of real women with real curves in their underwear, a SuperBowl ad promoting self-esteem among girls, activity booklets, a comprehensive Web site and more. Kappa Delta is proud to join forces with Dove to make a difference in the lives of women and girls across the country.
San Diego Walks
The city of San Diego hosts a variety of charity walks every year and Kappa Delta always signs up. Our chapter donates money to the event and we all lace up our running shoes and spend the day walking or running for a cause. It is always a lot of fun and great bonding time with your sisters.
